It was met with generally mixed-to-negative reviews by critics, who praised its action scenes, cinematography and performances, but criticized its screenplay, story, editing and special effects.
The film is set in the 1st century AD, during the Han Dynasty. Huo An is the commander of the Protection Squad of the Western Regions, a group of warriors tasked with protecting the Silk Road from bandits and invaders. One day, Huo An is attacked by a group of Roman soldiers led by Tiberius (Adrien Brody), a corrupt Roman leader who is determined to conquer the Silk Road. Huo An is outnumbered and outmatched, but he is saved by a group of defected Roman soldiers led by General Lucius (John Cusack).
Huo An, Lucius and the defected Roman soldiers join forces to fight Tiberius and his army. The two sides clash in a series of epic battles, and Huo An and Lucius must overcome their differences in order to save the Silk Road and the people who live there.
The film was a commercial success in China, grossing over $122 million. However, it was not as well-received by critics, who found the story to be convoluted and the special effects to be subpar.
